Frequently Asked Questions
Got questions about installation, materials, or custom options? You’re in the right place. Below you’ll find answers to the most common questions we get about Tough Bar Fence panels, gates, and setup. If you don’t see what you’re looking for, just give us a call—we’re always happy to help.
Before digging, always call Dig-Safe (811) to have utilities flagged—this usually takes 48 business hours. You may need to contact your water company separately.
Clear all trees and brush from the fence path. The more level your ground is, the better your fence will look and function. Use a skid-steer or hire a dozer if needed.
Use a 300′ tape or measuring wheel to find your total linear feet. Panels are 20′ long but can be cut and spliced as needed without affecting appearance.
For 5 & 6 Bar panels, use 8′ tall posts (either 2 3/8″ or 2 7/8″ pipe, or wood of your choice). Posts must be level and plumb, as they’ll guide the rest of your line.
Run a tight string-line from both end posts, about a foot off the ground, on the side where the panels will attach. In windy or long runs, sight in a center post to stay aligned.
Standard spacing is 10′ apart, but for high-stress areas (like working pens), reduce to 8′ or less. Use spray paint to mark each post location after measuring with a 100′ tape.
Post holes should be 3′ deep, leaving 5′ above ground. Clean out holes so posts rest on solid ground.
Use two string-lines—one for position (bottom) and one for height (top). Check every post with a level. Fill holes with 80 lb. sack-crete, tamp well, and optionally add water in dry conditions. Let posts set for 24 hours before installing panels if time allows.
Panels can be mounted inside or outside the posts, depending on whether the fence faces livestock or a road.
For livestock: Panels should be on the inside of posts
For road-facing fences (no livestock): Panels can be mounted to the outside
- Use a come-along to lift the panel into place
- Tack weld it in 3 spots (start with the first 3 posts)
- Insert 8″ connectors into each bar
- Slide the next panel over the connectors until it meets the welded tit
- Repeat the tack-weld process for each panel
- After all panels are set, return and fully weld each bar to the posts
- If a vertical lines up with a post, weld it directly
Cut the panel to fit, then reuse the rest on your next run. Cap the tubing ends with welded angle iron for a clean, professional finish.
